Converting between temperature scales

Temperature is the one everyday conversion that is not a simple multiplication, because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin do not share a zero point. This tool converts between all three correctly, offset included.

It shows the value in every scale at once, which is handy when a recipe, a forecast, or a scientific note uses a unit you are not used to.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the temperature value.
  2. Choose the scale it is in.
  3. Choose the scale you want and read the converted figure.

What the inputs mean

From and to scales
Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin, in any combination.
Worked example

20°C converts to 68°F, because the conversion multiplies by 9/5 and then adds the 32-degree offset.

The formula, in plain terms

The value is first converted to Celsius, then to the target scale, applying the offset that a plain multiplication would miss.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't it a single multiplication?

Because the scales start at different points. The 32-degree offset between Celsius and Fahrenheit has to be included.

What is Kelvin used for?

Kelvin is the scientific scale that starts at absolute zero. It is Celsius shifted by 273.15 degrees.
