Working out running pace and speed

Pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance, and it is the number runners plan and race by. From a distance and a time, this calculator gives both your pace per kilometre or mile and your average speed.

Seeing pace and speed together makes it easy to set targets, compare efforts, and estimate finishing times for a longer distance.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the distance you covered and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter the total time in minutes.
  3. Read your pace per unit and your average speed.

What the inputs mean

Distance
The total distance covered, in your chosen unit.
Time (minutes)
Total elapsed time. Convert hours to minutes first, 1 hour 5 minutes is 65.
Worked example

Running 10 km in 55 minutes is a pace of 5:30 per kilometre and an average speed of about 10.9 km/h.

The formula, in plain terms

Pace is time divided by distance; speed is distance divided by time in hours.
